There are 5 museums in Mazamet to help you understand wood working and crafts, Catharism, the prime importance of wool in Mazamet’s history, and medieval times.

« Maison du Bois et du Jouet » - Wood & Toys

Sitting on the banks of the river beneath the medieval village of Hautpoul (just a 15 minute walk from the GR7) the 'Maison du Bois et du Jouet' welcomes you for a fun journey into the world of wood. You will find more than 1500 games and toys from all periods.
There is also an exhibition of 31 dolls’ houses: Tudor, Georgian, and American – a miniature universe.
The visit concludes in a large playroom where more than 40 games are available.  All ages will have fun.  There is a special toddlers’ area.
In the shop you will find a large choice of games, toys and other objects produced by one of more than twenty local craftsmen.
Outside there is an arboretum sheltering 50 species of trees typical of the area, a picnic area and a play area devoted to folk tales and fables from La Fontaine.

Maison des Mémoires / Maison Fuzier

Right next to Mazamet town centre is the "Maison des Mémoires" or Memories House, which shelters both the Cathar Museum, and the Tourist Office with its three exhibition rooms offering free admittance:
- the living rooms of the 'Maison Fuzier'
- models of Cathar castles by E. Fuchs
- temporary exhibitions on the history of the town
All accessible to people with reduced mobility

Musée du Catharisme Occitan - Cathar Museum

In the centre of Mazamet, on the first floor of this beautiful 19th century residence, the Cathar Museum, will help you to understand the tragic story of the Cathars.  Follow the Faithful, bons hommes and bonnes femmes, and learn about their beliefs and rituals.  The visit is richly illustrated with full surround sound and two videos (in French) and is based on the story of the medieval village of Hautpoul. (Air-conditioned and accessible to people with reduced mobility.)

Opening Times:
From February 1st to March 31st: Open Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 12pm and from 2pm to 4:30 pm.
From April 1st to June 30th and from September 1st to November 4th: open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 12pm and from 2pm to 5pm.
July and August: Open Monday to Saturday: from 10h to 12h and from 14h to 18h. Sunday and public holidays: from 2.30 pm to 6 pm
From November 5th to November 30th: open Wednesday and Saturday from 10h to 12h and from 14h to 16h30.
December and January: welcome only by appointment.

Musée départemental du Textile - Textil Museum

In an old 19th century textil factory, in the middle of the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut-Languedoc, the Departemental Textil Museum is a witness of the wealth, the know-how and the industrial heritage in Tarn. The collections show the technics of woolen from the transformation of the raw material to the finished product. The visit is animated by demonstrations of machines with a team of ancient workers who communicate their passion for their work. Temporary exhibitions and working groups complete the visit and give information to the visitors about the textil arts and technics from all over the world.
